Competitor Mapping

Competitor Mapping links comparable room types between you and your competitors. This ensures fair price comparisons and reliable competitor insights in RevControl.

With Competitor Mapping, you define which competitor room types are comparable to your own room types.

RevControl uses this mapping to:

  • Compare competitor prices correctly
  • Display data logically in the Rates Table and Rates Calendar
  • Provide reliable market insights

Without proper mapping, you may compare different room types. This can distort your insights.

Where can you find Competitor Mapping?

Go to:

Settings → Mapping → Competitor Mapping

Here you will see:

  • Your own room types
  • The room types of your selected competitors
  • A column called Unmapped to quickly identify unlinked room types

How does mapping work?

1. Review your own room types

Make sure your room types are logically structured and clearly defined. They form the basis of the comparison. Each "base type" (as shown in Settings → Mapping → Export Setup) gets its own column in the competitor mapping.

2. Link comparable room types

For each competitor, link the most comparable room type to your own.

Pay attention to:

  • Number of persons
  • Private vs. shared
  • Included or excluded facilities
  • Extras such as balcony or ensuite bathroom

3. Check “Unmapped”

Use the Unmapped filter to identify room types that are not yet linked.

Not every room type needs to be mapped, but the more relevant types you link, the better the comparison.

Note:
If you only have 1 base type and all competitor types are mapped to it, newly added competitor room types will automatically be mapped.

If you have multiple base types or at least 1 room type (own or competitor's) is unmapped, newly added room types will automatically be unmapped.

What happens if mapping is incorrect or missing?

This may lead to:

  • Unrealistic price differences
  • Misinterpretation of your market position
  • Unreliable competitor graphs

Tip: Always map based on comparability, not just on the room name. A “Deluxe” room at a competitor may be comparable to your standard room — and vice versa.

Best practices

  • Keep it clear: only map relevant room types
  • Review regularly: competitors may change their room setup
  • Align with your strategy: compare commercially relevant room types
  • Check new competitors: mapping is not automatically correct

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every room type need to be mapped?

No. Only the room types you want to include in your price comparison are required.

Is mapping done automatically?

If you only have one base room type and all competitor room types are linked, then yes.

If you have multiple room types, or if at least one type appears in Unmapped, new room types and competitors must be checked and linked manually.

Does mapping influence price recommendations?

Mapping ensures correct competitor price comparison. This supports analyses and insights and therefore also influences recommendations.
